We spent the past few weeks learning all about stories!

TODDLER TIME (1+2-YEAR-OLDS)
This group focused on songs and rhymes having to do with the body! We sang “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes,” looked at ourselves in the mirror and stuck out our tongues, and had fun dancing to “Looby Loo”. We also played musical instruments during the rhyme “1,2,3 Touch Your Knee”, Peekaboo, and Freeze Dance.
LITTLE LEARNERS (AGES 3-5, ENGLISH-SPEAKING FAMILIES)
This group kicked off the session by looking at their own bodies: What does a body have? How long are our legs, and how big of a step can we take? We then learned what’s inside of our bodies. Mr. Bones came to visit and told us a bit about bones. We quickly learned that we didn’t need to be afraid and all gave him a high five! The letter B also came to class. We hear this sound when we talk about bones and breathing, which we learned about the following week. We sang “The Healthy Heart Song,” ate cookies as we learned a bit about digestion, and did a little experiment to find out why we need to cover our mouths with our elbows when we sneeze. Achoooooo!

GET READY, GET SET
(AGES 5-7, ENGLISH-SPEAKING FAMILIES)
After working in small groups to draw what we already know about the body, we spent the following few weeks learning about bodily systems. We looked at our fingerprints for distinctive patterns; did a lung simulation to show what the lungs do while breathing; threw and caught balls as a springboard to learning how the brain works; and ate cookies to help us pay attention to what happens in our bodies while we eat. We also acted out food’s trip through the body, which made us laugh. We used the poem “I Use My Brain” to help us learn sight words and recognize rhymes!
DISCOVER MORE (AGES 7-9,
ENGLISH-SPEAKING FAMILIES)
This group delved more deeply into how bodily systems work. We learned about hair and skin and did an experiment to find out how strong one strand of hair can be; passed beanbags around, which represented the air going into the lungs and around the body; did an interactive activity involving exchanging “old” blood for “fresh” blood that could be sent around the body; created the Digestive Dance and measured how long intestines are; and, after learning that our brain has two halves and that areas of the brain are responsible for certain functions, we moved our bodies according to Brain Gym exercises, getting those two brain halves working together!
